It is furnished out with approximately the same things. Characters come, move about and make their final exits through long-familiar doors. And the back drop remains approximately the same from beginning to end. Palace or hovel, forest or sea, it is the background for the moving figures of the play. So Sara Lee Kennedy had a back drop that had every appearance of permanency. The great Scene Painter apparently intended that there should be no change of set for her. Sara Lee herself certainly expected none. But now and then amazing things are done on this great stage of ours lights go down; the back drop, which had given the illusion of solidity, reveals itself transparent. A sort of fairyland transformation takes place. Beyond the once solid wall strange figures move on a new mise en scene, with the old blotted out in darkness.

The Amazing Interlude Classic Reprint Mary Roberts Rinehart Books
Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 - 1957) published her first novel in 1906 and her last in 1954. They sold in the millions of copies, and led to her receiving a special Edgar award in 1954. one of her costumed characters, the Bat, was the inspiration for Batman. She also wrote 10 collections of short stories. After stumbling across The Amazing Interlude in Kindle format, I remembered Rinehart and decided to read it for kicks. I'm still surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how good it is, even though it came out in 1918. One piece of advice often given to new writers is to write for the audience of their own time. Knowing how different American culture is now from the culture post WWI, I expected to find a very dull book.
I apologize to Mrs. Rinehart's shade. The novel is suspenseful and entertaining, and topical.
Set in America and the Belgian front in 1914, it's the story of Sara Lee Kennedy who decides to do her small part to help the soldiers at the start of the war by opening a soup kitchen near the front. (She has the support of an American Ladies Aid Society.) Although she is engaged to be married (a far tighter bond then than it is now), she makes her way to England and then to Belgium. Along the way she meets a young Belgian named Henri who helps her find a place at the front.
While she is there, she sees first hand how war damages or destroys people, their homes, farms, and towns. She survives bombing raids by the Germans, encounters spies, sees people killed whom she has grown to like, and slowly, inexorably, comes to love Henri while remaining so determined to keep her promise to Harvey that she returns to the US to marry him. This picture of war comes from the author's own experience as a foreign correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post at the Belgian front.
I give The Amazing Interlude 5 stars for its suspense and for the characterization of Sara Lee, who grows and changes during the course of the novel. She begins by accepting her role and ends by choosing her own path.

The Amazing Interlude Classic Reprint Mary Roberts Rinehart Books Reviews
I first heard of Mary Roberts Rinehart when she was mentioned as a "new author of mysteries" in a book I was reading. Since then, I've read quite a few of her books. This one, however, is easily my favorite. Rinehart created both characters and a story that I yearned to know. Even as I've finished the book, I'm still thinking of their story and envisioning what the future had in store for them. To me, that is the highest praise - to have written a story that touches the heart and sparks the imagination.
More than a charming story of love in war time. This is the tale of an American woman who sacrificed her comfort and settled life to help those in need in Belgium, and found a career that suited her, in spite of danger. It is an inside look at what America was like at the time, and how Europe was responding to the first attacks of the invaders. Some coincidences seemed a bit contrived, but the author's skill take you into the conflict and you don't mind any of the easy answers. A very good read! I couldn't put it down.
It is very different from modern stories, which made it a nice change of pace. The reader must be able to think differently, to grasp social conventions from a past era, in order to understand why things we ignore today were important in the story. If you enjoy old black and white movies, I think you will enjoy this book. If you only relate to horror, cruelty, fast-paced action, or "cutting edge" modern-day fashions and trends (I'm not talking about clothes), this story is not for you. If your horizon is wider than that, give it a try.
Originally published in 1918, while WWI still raged, this is an incredibly beautiful tale of service, love of humanity, and love between man and woman. Sara Lee is very much a woman of her time, but felt a call to service long before her own nation entered "The War To End All Wars." Making her way to Belgium, her soup and chocolate kitchen becomes a critical morale point for the tiny, beleaguered Belgian army. Supported along the way by Henri and Jean, Marie and Rene, and the Travers couple, she also learns about the love soldiers have for each other, love for a lost home and family, love for friends with the same wartime experiences, and the love of a lifetime.
This is a gentle story, but keep your hankies nearby, for it's also a romance of the grand type not written today.
This is a keeper, plain and simple.
I've got so many books on my kindle that sometimes I forget to read the older stuff. I am very happy that I happened upon this book. I think I've read Mary Roberts Rinehart before and picked up several of her books at once. This story really affected me. I loved Sara Lee and her determination to help even though it wasn't "her fight". She was very strong although as often as possible she was depicted as passive. But when she finally allowed herself to think for herself and not worry about other people's opinions, She matured into a lovely giving woman. I have often, in these days of war and worries, wished I could do something to help like she did. She was selfless and willing to go all out to help the Belgian people. I wish I were as Brave as she was and not as cynical and self-defeating as I am. She is an inspiration even in these modern times.
There must have been a lot of dust around when I read this, because I got a lump in my throat about three paragraphs in and it stayed there the whole way through. This novel is a superb evocation of small-town America on the eve of the Great War, and of our naive but determined heroine's adventures running a soup kitchen for soldiers just behind the front lines. Rinehart's prose is perfect, and although the heroine is perhaps a bit too good, Belgian officer Henri and her fiance back home, Harvey, are well-drawn and very much alive.
