The novel started out with the discovery of a dead man in a small boat wearing a dress and surrounded by artificial flowers. Thomas Pitt was called in to investigate this murder because the local police thought the deceased resembled a French diplomat that had been reported missing. Although Anne Perry frequently referred to this mysterious French diplomat who resembled the deceased, at the end she provided a weak resolution of this red herring. As other reviewers have pointed out, there were two storylines and although they converged at the end, the second story (created around a terrible secret that the Grandmother had kept for many years) did not add anything to the original mystery. In fact, Anne Perry used the second story as a means to inject her thoughts regarding pornography and her reflections about the theatre and Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde. Anne Perry dedicated so much of the novel to the second story and the thought processes of Caroline and her mother-in-law that at one point I forgot that I was reading a mystery. Then abruptly the next chapter jumped back to Pitt and the investigation. After enduring all the boring parts (which was most of the novel), the ending was so weak as to be laughable. I would never recommend this book to anyone and I think that I will not waste anymore of my money on Anne Perry's books. I didn't think that any of her books could get worse than the earlier Pitt novels when Emily and Charlotte (two silly sisters) kept interfering in the investigations. But Half Moon Street was awful. If I had had a hard copy of this novel (I bought the Kindle version), I would have tossed it in the garbage.

Have been "working" my way systematically through the Monk and Pitt series, and so glad I've discovered them. The books have everything the genre should have, but are written with compassion, kindness, and an oft amazingly deep insight in the human soul.
Don't start to read these books unless you are prepared to get hooked. I read the first book and just kept going. The stories are so involved and show a picture of the times and politics of the era. It follows the caracters from one book to the next seamlessly while layering on new people and issues. I love the main caracters, Charlotte and Thomas. Keeping up with Charlotte while she keeps getting involved in Thomas's police cases is fascinating. I suggest you start with their first book and work up from there. You will really love them.
This novel is set in London in 1891, with particular emphasis on the theatres and the arts. It relates to a time period when women could be held in virtual slavery by their husbands. It deals with a variety of issues including women's rights, pornography, and perversions. It is more a romance novel than a mystery. While the novel has interesting sub-plots, perhaps it contains too many to be a good novel. The author also seems to be on a soap box, and perhaps does a little too much name dropping...
Inspector Pitt and Sergeant Tellman find themselves investigating sleazy shops that sell pornographic photos under-the-counter, sometimes to teenage boys - photos that sometimes depict acts that are illegal. The investigation eventually leads to a solution of the case. The novel deals with the seamier side of people's lives. It has content unsuitable for children. Parental discretion is advised.
Perry is up to her usual gripping suspense story here with continuing character development of Thomas and Charlotte Pitt and those with whom they interact in Victorian London.
This is one of my favorites of Anne Perry's Pitt novels. We find out what led to the hateful bitterness in the old MIL of Caroline (and Grandmother to Charlotte and Emily) I always thought the nasty old lady should be slapped! Aunt V gives excellent council about dealing with people too wounded to be kind.

There is good discussion by the characters of both sides painful social issues, the damage from porn - and other's desire to express themselves and shake society's rigid values and roles of women; all without seeming contrived.

Perry sure doesn't have a predictable formula. I especially enjoyed reading this one for the interaction between the characters as they consider opposing viewpoints and open their minds a little. ...and again, how the seemingly morally up-right person can be so evil, hidden under pomposity....
If you already love Anne Perry mysteries for not only the plot but also the setting, the details of Victorian England, and the characters, you can buy this book without reading further, and you won't be disappointed. But if you're wondering whether this is a good author to get into, and a good book to read on its own merits--let me assure you it is more than a mystery. It has a major theme that speaks to a person of any generation the theme of openness/frankness (generally prized by the younger generation, especially Americans) and privacy/reticence (seen often in the older generation even in America.) "Why don't they say what they mean?" the youngsters ask of their grandparents. And "Why do they insist upon letting it all hang out?" ask the oldsters (probably in less slangy language). With brilliance, Perry shows the pros and cons of these two attitudes, associating them to different degrees with different characters in her novel. Just as you feel like saying "Right on!" for the boldness of a frank and forward-looking woman, you are confronted with the unnecessary pain such overtness would cause another woman. You have to reconsider your endorsement. This is a book to make you assess and reassess your own assumptions, to force you to recognize the pros and cons, on both personal and societal levels, of different attitudes towards "truth-telling" and censorship, and to lead you to more of both understanding and being understood across generational lines. Besides, it's a good story, an engaging mystery--what better combination could you ask for?
