Spiral Ring Series Book 2 Koji Suzuki Books
Spiral surprised me. It began as a horror book much like Ring but ended up delving into science fiction. The books have nothing to do with the American movie, The Ring. So far the closest to the book I've seen in the Korean, Ring Virus. The books focus much more on the plague of humanity, and the spread of disease than the movies could ever hope to touch. The Ring series, at times, reads more like Richard Preston's The Hot Zone, focusing on diseases like AIDS, Smallpox and the like. That does not mean they are not terrifying in their own right. I had to stop 2/3 of the way through Spiral to catch much breath.
I'm dying to see what Suzuki will do for a finish. He has evolved the series into scifi horror beautifully. Reviewers have made the comparison to Stephen King for Suzuki. I don't believe that is accurate. Suzuki weaves language and ideas into a tapestry without wasting either. After reading Ring, Spiral and Dark Water, I can't imagine what else he'll bring forth.

Spiral Ring Series Book 2 Koji Suzuki Books Reviews
Spiral somehow manages to pull off two apparently impossible things spectacularly fail as a sequel to Suzuki's Ring and be rather successful as a sci fi book in its own right. Spiral supposedly picks off where Ring ended, with the autopsies of the first victims of the ring virus, but then it takes a completely different and rather unexpected turn. Instead of the "chills and thrills" of the first installment, Spiral delves into the science behind the ring virus, with so much genetics you can't help wonder sometimes if that might not be the author's true calling.
I give it to Suzuki – I have never ever read as convincing a scientific explanation of a curse in my entire life. But then there is the rather reasonable question why would anyone bother with that considering it would instantly kill any remaining spookiness for the reader? Be prepared for some drastic changes to some of Ring's fundamental premises (the mechanism of the "charm", Sadako's death wish, Ryuji's involvement) to fit the new "science" in the novel. In the end, with so much of the story devoted to explaining prior events, the book feels much more like a reimagening of Ring for science geeks than like an actual sequel. Overall, a decent detective sci fi novel with a couple of horror overtones, but not on a par with Ring.
This book is very engaging for those who enjoyed the book "Ring", or have seen either movie made in US or Japan. The fantasy aspect of the story is skillfully drawn into simple tasks of everyday life, and it makes the reader ponder his/her own ambien. The translations of both "Ring" and "Spiral" are superb. I am looking forward to more books from Vertical Publishing company.
While many sequels tend to deviate from the original storyline, "Spiral" was the completely opposite it was able to add an entirely new dimension to the book without changing the original story. Koji Suzuki masterfully continued the famous story of Sadako while incorporating the new element of science to the plot. Although skeptical at first as to how interesting "Spiral" would be after reading "Ring", by the time I was done with it I felt as amazed by the sequel as I had by the original.
Great product and arrived on time
Much more dry than the first, and generally too scientific for my tastes. I never thought I would say it, but I think the movies went in a much better direction than the book series.
The book Spiral is like an autopsy of Ring. It splits it open, explores areas previously unseen, and gives a forensic analysis of every aspect of it's previous incarnation.
It answers every question, fills every potential plot-hole and makes you see the story in a completely different light. Here is where the series completely leaves behind the movie Ring.
I thought it was fascinating. Although I guess it takes the horror out of the picture.
The only question left is What happens next?
Amazing book. Perfect conditions. Arrived in time.
