The Creative License Giving Yourself Permission to Be the Artist You Truly Are Danny Gregory 8601400086322 Books Reviews
Many years ago I gave myself the permission to be what I was in my heart--a kid, an artist, a drawer, a painter. When I first opened Danny's book and brushed through the pages, I had tears in my eyes. I remember the sad days when I was afraid to try something new. To be something I didn't feel I could...and since I didn't feel that I could do it, I usually didn't.
Danny's book tears away at the premise of this fear. Gives you the permission..and suggestions for a creative life....and a journaling life that you never have experienced before. Creativity begets creativity. When you have it and use it, it grows...in leaps and bounds. You forget about the things you "think" you can't do...and just go for it...whatever "it" is!
Since giving myself permission to be creative, I have become a watercolor artist, dabbled into pastels, acrylics, oils, crocheting, quilting, knitting, learned how to play the guitar, the Irish tin whistle, and the Native American Flute. Where will this spirit take me now? Who knows...but I will have journals filled with images to indicate my experiences and adventures.
Thank you Danny for writing this book! I am sure it will fill my creative spirit with fun for many years to come!

Danny Gregory started to journal his life in pictures following his wife's tragic accident which left her wheelchair-bound. He encourages the reader to really see the things around us, those mundane objects we encounter every day that may not be beautiful, yet they enhance our existence. He helps us to see beauty in the simple things, and enjoy those moments we have with loved ones, and even with strangers, which serve to make up the moments of our lives. His sketches are detailed and inspiring, and they show me that I don't have to be another DaVinci in order to create and enjoy art about life.
I have a lot of really good books ... but this one goes a step beyond. I've been inspired by the work of Danny Gregory for a while, but I wasn't sure I really wanted this book at first; I tend to abhor those preachy "you, too, can find unleash your inner creativity, blah, blah, blah." This book has been a huge and wonderful surprise. It has the honesty and openness of his other books, but goes a step further; the simple discussion of the reluctance many of us feel - and the why behind it, and how to get around it. There are creative & easy exercises, wonderful ideas for incorporating quick sketching into brief moments of the day, insight into what drawing is (and isn't?), bits on writing, contemplation and so much more. And the whole journey is interspersed with his wonderful recollections of moments & experiences in his own life, along with his wonderful artwork. I cannot let go of this book. Have read it cover to cover and still find inspiration in returning again. Thank you Danny Gregory. There are a handful of books I know I will keep for a lifetime. This is one of them.
A friend recommended Danny Gregory's "Art Before Breakfast" earlier this year. I promptly checked it out from my local library and enjoyed it so much, I checked out nearly every one of the books by Gregory that my library carried. My favorite one was "The Creative License". I love how he speaks to you at your level and encourages you in your creativity with simple drawing exercises with whatever materials you have on hand. I appreciate his candor in sharing his personal experience and I love all his little drawings. For anyone hesitant to start drawing (or returning to it after a 40 year hiatus) I recommend this book. It will definitely encourage your inner artist.
I own several of Danny Gregory's books and this is my favorite. He really encourages and inspires you to sketch even if.... like me.... you think you can't draw. I have also taken a couple of Danny's online courses at SketchbookSkool . com so I am familiar with his teaching style and enthusiastic encouragement which come through in this early book of his. My only complaint is that the typeface mimics handwriting and I find it difficult to read in some places. Most of it is okay to read, but I sure wish the publisher would re-issue this with a normal typeface - it is a great book.
